Digital Economy – the Driver of Society Development in Montenegro

AmCham Montenegro, in coordination with our partners Crnogorski Telekom, Telenor and m:tel, hosted today a conference entitled “Telecommunications in Montenegro – Contribution of Digital Economy to Society Development” at the Hotel Ramada, Podgorica.

As concluded at the conference, the main prerequisite for the development of digital economy as one of the pillars of society development is to provide the level playing field for all participants in the market. A transparent and fair regulatory framework would be crucial for improving the business environment, hence for the society development in total.

The Acting Director of AmCham Montenegro, Ms. Milica Dragojević, stated that the investments in Montenegrin economy from the telecommunication operators are estimated to 27 million € per year. A yearly amount of 39 million € are collected in taxes. “The contribution is not only measured by the amount of money, but also with the number of jobs created in this and related sectors, which is more than 900. Likewise, we cannot dispute the importance of transfer of knowledge for the advancement of our society and the indirect employment created by going digital“, said Ms. Dragojević.

Minister Vujica Lazović at the AmCham Conference on Telecommunications

Minister of Information Society and Telecommunication, Mr. Vujica Lazović, assesed that the Government of Montenegro, together with the Ministry, perceive ICT as the crucial sector in driving the economic development of the country. Going digital is important for improving the social welfare, as well as the competitive position of the country in the region and Europe.

The conference hosted two panel discussions, which elaborated on the impact of digital economy to the society development, as well as the regulatory trends in regulation in the telecommunication industry.
